Amsterdam Stag Do FAQ

Yes, but with important caveats. Amsterdam offers 70+ stag activities, universally spoken English, cheap direct UK flights (often £20-40 return), and genuinely unique experiences: legal coffeeshops, Red Light District bar crawls, canal boat parties, and the iconic Heineken Experience. The downside is cost — Amsterdam is the most expensive major European stag destination at £600-800 per person per weekend. The city also runs an active "Stay Away" campaign and enforces strict 2025-2026 rules on group behaviour. Amsterdam works best for groups who want a premium, liberal experience and are willing to behave responsibly.
Amsterdam launched a formal "Stay Away" digital campaign in 2023 specifically targeting British men aged 18-34, identifying them as responsible for "the majority of problems caused by offensive behaviour." The campaign runs targeted social media ads showing drunk tourists getting arrested, with the message: "If your intention is to booze and misbehave, dressed like a penis, look elsewhere." The campaign has expanded with 2024-2025 legislation including new group tour caps, cannabis bans on Red Light District streets, earlier bar closures, and alcohol sales banned after 4pm Thursday-Sunday. Stag groups are still welcome if they behave responsibly — the campaign targets nuisance behaviour, not tourism itself.
Key rules in force for 2025-2026: (1) Cannabis cannot be smoked on Red Light District streets — coffeeshop consumption only; (2) Guided group tours are capped at maximum 15 participants; (3) Guided tours past sex workers' windows are completely prohibited; (4) Alcohol sales in shops banned after 4pm Thursday-Sunday; (5) Bars close at 3am weekends, clubs at 5am weekends under the new Catering Policy 2025; (6) Beer bike routes are restricted to city-approved paths; (7) Never photograph sex workers in windows — fines, physical removal, or camera destruction by bouncers. Violations risk fines from €100-€300 and police removal. Emergency number in the Netherlands: 112.
Budget £600-800 per person per weekend including flights, accommodation, activities, and nightlife for an 8-12 person group. Accommodation ranges £80-150 per night for city centre hotels. Activities: beer bike £38-45/person, Heineken Experience £25, private canal cruise with unlimited drinks £54-60/person, Red Light District bar crawl £32, Leidseplein bar crawl £31.50 (entry to 5 bars and club), paintball £35, escape room £30, bubble football £45. Nightlife typically costs £50-100+ per evening. Amsterdam is 2-3x more expensive than Eastern European stag destinations. Amsterdam flights from UK are often the cheapest in Europe, frequently running £20-40 return, which partially offsets overall costs.
Amsterdam costs 2-3x more than Prague or Bratislava for an equivalent weekend (£600-800 vs £200-350). However, Amsterdam offers genuinely unique experiences that Eastern Europe cannot replicate: legal coffeeshop culture, the Red Light District, canal boat parties, and world-class city infrastructure. Choose Amsterdam if your group specifically wants the Dutch liberal experience and budget is not a primary concern. Choose Prague for the best nightlife at the lowest cost. Choose Bratislava for maximum budget value. Choose Budapest for thermal baths and ruin bars. Amsterdam flights are often the cheapest from UK airports, which reduces the cost gap somewhat.
Yes — as of 2026, tourists can still purchase cannabis in Amsterdam's licensed coffeeshops. The residency requirement enforced in other Dutch cities like Maastricht and Breda does not apply in Amsterdam. Rules: must be 18 or older, must carry valid ID (passport or EU ID card), maximum 5 grams per person per day. Coffeeshop hours are typically 8am-1am on weekdays and until 3am on weekends. Critical 2025 change: smoking cannabis on Red Light District streets is now banned — you must consume inside the coffeeshop. Well-known coffeeshops for stag groups: The Bulldog (most famous, multiple locations), Grey Area, and Boerejongens. Note: Amsterdam city officials are still debating further restrictions, so check current rules before visiting.
Since May 2025 cannabis is banned on Red Light District streets. You can smoke: inside licensed coffeeshops (safest and simplest option), in some parks away from busy areas, and in private accommodation (always check your hotel's policy — most city centre hotels prohibit it). You cannot smoke in: Red Light District streets, Leidseplein square, Rembrandtplein square, on public transport, in restaurants, or in regular bars. Fines for smoking in prohibited public areas start at €100. The practical advice for stag groups: buy at a coffeeshop and consume on-site before continuing your evening. Do not walk between venues with a joint lit.
Top Amsterdam stag activities: beer bike tour (£38-45/person, min 10), private canal cruise with unlimited drinks (£54-60/person, 90 minutes), Heineken Experience brewery tour (£25/person, includes 3 beer tastings), Red Light District bar crawl (£32/person, entry to 5 bars and club), Leidseplein bar crawl (£31.50/person), paintball (£35), bubble football (£45), laser tag (£25), escape rooms (£30), and private pub crawl (from £437/event). Unique to Amsterdam: guided Red Light District walking tour, Dutch sex museum visit (€5), smurfette dwarf pub crawl (£21/person), coffeeshop and craft beer tour, and strip party boat (all-you-can-drink). Most activities include English-speaking guides.
Yes — Amsterdam's beer bike is still operating in 2026, unlike Budapest and Prague where it has been banned. The tour costs £38-45 per person (minimum 10 people) for a 60-90 minute pedal-powered party through Amsterdam's streets with your own beer supply. Critically, the city has restricted routes and prohibited beer bikes from certain streets and squares. Only book through licensed operators who follow the current approved routes — unlicensed beer bikes risk police stops and fines mid-tour. The beer bike remains one of Amsterdam's most iconic and photographed stag activities and works perfectly as a Saturday afternoon warm-up before the evening pub crawl.
Yes — the Heineken Experience at the original 1867 Heineken brewery is one of Amsterdam's best value stag activities at £25 per person. The 1.5-2 hour self-guided tour includes 3 free Heineken pints tasted at different temperatures, interactive exhibits about brewing history, a personalised Heineken bottle with your name on it, and access to a rooftop bar. Private group tasting sessions with a dedicated host are available for an upgrade. Located 15 minutes walk from Leidseplein, it pairs perfectly as a Saturday afternoon activity before an evening pub crawl. Book online in advance — weekend tickets sell out regularly.
The three main areas are Leidseplein, Rembrandtplein, and De Wallen (Red Light District). Leidseplein is the most stag-friendly — lively outdoor terraces, 20+ bars on Korte Leidsedwarsstraat alone, coffeeshops nearby, and walkable from most hotels. Rembrandtplein offers bigger mainstream clubs and a guaranteed late-night party atmosphere. De Wallen adds the iconic Amsterdam experience with a unique mix of pubs, sex shows, and late-night bars but requires respectful behavior under heavy police presence. Entry fees range from free to €10 at clubs. Bars close at 3am and clubs at 5am on weekends under the 2025 Catering Policy. Smart casual dress is required at most clubs — leave the stag fancy dress at the hotel.
The Red Light District is generally safe but has firm rules: (1) Never photograph sex workers in windows — bouncers will physically remove you, destroy your phone, or sex workers may douse cameras with bleach or ammonia; (2) Never knock on or approach windows; (3) Cannabis cannot be smoked on RLD streets since 2025; (4) Guided tours past windows are completely prohibited; (5) Watch for pickpockets on busy Friday and Saturday nights; (6) Some women outside bars are scammers who lure men inside and rob them while distracted. Always stay together as a group, show respect to workers, avoid drunken disorderly behaviour — police presence is extremely heavy and will remove stag groups causing trouble immediately.
Book strip clubs exclusively through reputable stag operators with pre-agreed pricing. Amsterdam has documented cases of overcharging and "hostess bar" scams where men are pressured into buying women expensive drinks at hundreds of euros per round, with aggressive staff preventing departure until paid. Never enter a venue based on an invitation from a person on the street or in the Red Light District. Stick to operator-booked packages with fixed pricing agreed in writing. Leave credit cards at the hotel and carry only cash you can afford to lose for the evening. The "Stay Away" crackdown has increased police monitoring of venues known for targeting tourists.
Since 2024, Amsterdam caps all guided group tours at a maximum of 15 participants. This rule applies to all guided tours including organised stag dos, pub crawls with guides, and walking tours of the Red Light District. Guided tours past sex workers' windows are additionally completely prohibited. For groups of 16 or more, you must book two separate guide slots running simultaneously. Self-guided groups are not subject to the 15-person cap but must still follow all Red Light District conduct rules. Book guided activities through registered operators who are fully aware of current regulations and have appropriate licensed guides for each group of up to 15.
Top daytime options: Heineken Experience (£25, includes 3 beer tastings), private canal cruise with unlimited drinks (£54-60/person, 90 minutes), beer bike (£38-45/person), paintball (£35), bubble football (£45), laser tag (£25), escape rooms (£30), Dutch cheese and jenever tasting tour, and Keukenhof tulip gardens (March-May only). For bad weather: indoor karting, NEMO Science Museum, ice bar, or a coffeeshop afternoon. The most popular stag daytime combination is the Heineken Experience followed by a canal cruise with unlimited drinks — total cost around £80-85/person for both. Most activities are fully bookable in English with hotel meeting points.
Leidseplein is the best base for stag groups — walking distance to bars, clubs, coffeeshops, the Heineken Experience, and Vondelpark, with excellent tram connections. Hotels here range £80-150 per night. Top stag-friendly options: Hotel City Garden (by Vondelpark, Leidseplein area), Meininger Amsterdam Amstel (budget-friendly group rooms near nightlife), and MEININGER Amsterdam City West (near Sloterdijk station, good transport links). Rembrandtplein area offers similar convenience and is popular with Erasmus students. Avoid Amsterdam-Noord (residential, no overnight ferry) and the Red Light District itself — overpriced, noisy, and heavily policed at night.
Amsterdam's city centre is 4km across — most stag venues are fully walkable from Leidseplein. GVB trams and metro cover everything else: day tickets cost €9/day or €15 for 2 days. Taxis and Bolt are available but expensive in peak hours. Bike rental (£12-20/day) is how locals travel but is strongly not recommended for stag groups — Dutch police actively fine tourists €140 for cycling under the influence, and cycling accidents are extremely common at night. Canal boat hire (private boats from €140/hour) is a fun transfer option between areas. Amsterdam Centraal is the main hub connecting all transport. Never cycle drunk.
Under Amsterdam's Catering Policy 2025, bars and cafés close at 1am on weekdays and 3am on weekends. Nightclubs close at 4am on weekdays and 5am on weekends. Restaurants and snack bars close at 1am on weekdays and 2am on weekends. Outdoor terraces close at 1am on weekdays, 2am on weekends in summer, and midnight every day in winter. Alcohol cannot be purchased from shops after 4pm Thursday through Sunday. This is stricter than most Eastern European capitals where clubs run until dawn every night. Top late-night clubs in Amsterdam: Air Amsterdam, Shelter, Melkweg (Milky Way), and Paradiso — all operating until 5am on weekends.
Rotterdam and Eindhoven are increasingly recommended by Dutch locals as genuine alternatives. Rotterdam (40 minutes from Amsterdam by train) is "significantly less congested than Amsterdam," more affordable, has no active "Stay Away" campaign, and has a strong club scene. Eindhoven has Stratumseind — one of Europe's longest bar streets with 60+ bars in a single stretch — cheaper accommodation, no tourist overcrowding, and a real local nightlife scene. Reddit Amsterdam locals actively direct stag groups to both cities. Both offer the Dutch experience at 30-50% lower prices. If your group's priority is nightlife and value rather than the Red Light District or coffeeshops specifically, Rotterdam or Eindhoven deliver more fun for less money.
Book 8-12 weeks in advance for peak season (April-September). The Heineken Experience, private canal cruises, beer bikes, and guided bar crawls sell out on summer weekends. Amsterdam's reduced hotel capacity — new hotel construction has been banned citywide — means accommodation fills faster than in previous years. For groups of 16 or more, the 15-person guided tour cap means booking two simultaneous guide slots in advance. Use ABTA-protected UK operators for full packages. Last-minute bookings under 2 weeks before peak weekends risk zero availability for beer bikes, canal cruises, and VIP nightclub entry. King's Day (late April) and Tulip season (March-May) see the highest demand — book 4-6 months ahead for those dates.
